Ramblings on Twitter and our society

Yesterday I set up my twitter account, added a couple of tweets, and read some comments others had posted. This morning I was thinking about the popularity about twitter and what it might be implying about our changing society. In the past life moved at a slower pace. People knew their neighbors and often stopped to chat when seeing each other outside, at the store or other places. Frequently the topic of conversation would be about general topics such as the weather, their families or "what they were doing".
Today we hurry off to work where we spend many hours. On the weekends we are racing around trying to get the things done around the house and yard or running kids to this, that or another activity. Sometimes we don't know the first names of the people who live on either side of us. We might say hi when we're outside, but seldom take the time to chat-even about little day to day things. We just don't have the time.
Twittering seems to be a way to catch up with people on the while run without really needing to spend time with them or to feel like part of a group.
I'd love to hear comments on this.

  1. As you can observe even among our group of Challengers, so people really take to twittering. Others seem totally turned off by it (like a group I had in training last Friday). I'm still unsure - usually I have too much to say! - but if there's a purpose for twittering in my life and work it will become evident and then I'll make use of it.
